We just purchased two tags. We opened the “ find my” app, not realizing the cost is $6.99 per month. I intend on using them for travel, on an occasional basis, so I would like to know if there is a free way to use them, as no where did I read you needed to pay in order to use them.

Assuming you mean Apple's AirTags, there is no charge for using AirTags. Where are you seeing this charge exactly?
My husband inadvertently bought the AirTag pro subscription, we were able to contact Apple to reverse the charge. I was not confused, thanks.
