Why have a large trail of my iPhone messages disappeared? Not sure how to get them back. I need to maintain the history. Some very important.

No one here in this forum would know what specifically happened with your phone.

Your post indicates that you are using iOS 16. If these messages disappeared after you updated to iOS 16, you should look in the Recently Deleted folder to see if they are there.
