Lightning to HDMI no longer working with IOS16 update

Lightning av adapter to HDMI no longer working after IOS16 update. Updated to current iOS 16.0.3 using Apple certified cord, turned off and on, phone is updated and backed up. It work until ios16. Another phone works, but not updated to the iOS16. For example Netflix mirrors from phone to tv and will play the trailer, but once I hit play the screen goes black and says now playing on your tv. But is not playing anything. How can I fix this issue? Thank you.

I just received the following email below from Spectrum TV (this is one of apps that wasn’t working for me). They are saying it’s APPLE.

“Thanks for the feedback. We have heard from our developers and this issue is an Apple issue with the iOS 16 update. Apple is aware of the issue and working on a fix. While not all streaming apps are impacted, we have been assured that this is not a Spectrum App issue. Please look for a future update from Apple to resolve the issue. To ask a question or provide additional feedback”

When I spoke to Apple on Tuesday, they said they were aware of the problem. The person I spoke to said he didn’t have an ETA as to when it would be fixed. Since it wasn’t fixed with the most recent 16.2 update, we have to wait and see what happens with the next update, but I’m not holding my breath. They truly don’t seem to care. I’m reading posts about this issue going back to September, so we’re now going on 3 months now without a resolution.

I called tech support and got to one of the higher-ups. He actually acknowledged it is an IOS 16 series software issue and that Apple is aware of it. Trouble is, he didn't give any specifics as to when it would be fixed or how. He thought probably through another IOS upgrade. Yikes !! Very maddening.

Everybody please keep posting whatever you find out about this.

i have an 11. the only way i am able to get mine to play is if i (EVERY TIME) go to settings, general, transfer/reset iphone, reset. every time and if i have to unplug phone for a call, i have to do the reset AGAIN to resume watching whatever it was. only since i did the update. it is so frustrating. the adapter is apple, it should work!! they do this on purpose to force us to spend more money, i swear.

Unfortunately, apple has rendered any aftermarket HDMI Cable as completely useless, as the installed software on the phone will NOT recognize any non-genuine apple product. I have confirmed this with the purchase of multiple aftermarket options, with no result or response from the phone/ipad. Once you purchase the Apple Certified HDMI Cable and plug it in, it will immediately prompt the user with a message that states "Downloading Firmware", and once its completed, you can enjoy seamless HDMI streaming to any device, from any screen or application on your phone, with sound.

*This applies to Apple's most recent update 16.4.1 on iPhone 13 ProMax

I am having the same issues with streaming Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, etc. I've upgraded to iOS 16.1 as well, without any successful "fix". I am using a certified Apple OEM lightning to HDMI adapter. I've attempted the use of all SIX of my certified Apple OEM lightning to HDMI dongles with zero success of each. Either I have a black screen on my TV with audio or I have no audio and a "stuttering" video display whereby the video plays in slow motion for a second then pauses, plays again in slow-mo for a second then pauses...and so forth. Currently ONE streaming apps worked successfully...Disney+. I find it a sickening shame that I've paid for six lightning to HDMI cables at the cost of nearly $50 each and the so called "much needed" updates fail to accommodate and keep useful purpose with an Apple designed and sold accessory.

The Rep I spoke to at Apple

a few weeks ago said we would have to wait until one of the next IOS updates and even then, there is a chance it may not get corrected on the next one.

Like I said before, Apple doesn’t seem to care and this issue is clearly at the bottom of their “fix-it” list. I’ve been reading comments about this issue going back to September, so it’s clearly not a priority for them. I would

be willing to go in on a Class Action LS since this is now costing people financially. How is it fair that people are buying new HDMI cables and Apple Lightning adapters when the issue is clearly due to the IOS 16 update. I can literally prove this by grabbing my son’s IPhone who is still running IOS 15.7 and there is no issues when I watch the same apps on his phone, but on my mine there is no sound or sometimes sound and no picture on most of the apps. What a nightmare this has been.

my iPhone 13 Pro was working fine with my brand new lightning adapter while I was on version 16.4. I bought the brand new lightning adapter this summer because I had some intermittent issues during the spring. Apple blamed my old TV or my Amazon/Netflix movie provider. when I downloaded 17.0.3 the TV won’t even recognize that the adapter is plugged in anymore. Can’t stream anything. The adapter works perfectly with the exact same TV, adapter and cables with my wife’s iPhone 13 Pro Max but she is on iOS 16.4. Apple broke my functionality with iOS 17.0.3 and most of the time will not admit it in most of these articles. Please return the functionality I paid for. This is a huge functional loss.

So after testing heres the latest and its pretty conclusive.

ISSUE;

-IOS 16 broke all external streaming and downloaded video using official apple HDMI lightening adapters world wide.

UPDATE, some good news

-A year later and still no video on downloads, only audio will sound

—if streaming though both audio and video will now work. Defeats the entire purpose of downloading though.

TESTED USING

-iphone 14 pro max ios 16.7.2

-Offical Apple HDMI lightning and USB-C adapter

-ipad pro, air 4 and air 5

-Tested with exact same repeatable results on all latest streaming apps: Netflix, Amazon Apple + and crave

-multiple working HDMi cables.

CONCLUSION:

Any USB-C device will work as designed and will play both audio and video downloads as well as streaming as expected.

Sadly the official expensive Apple lightening HDMI convector is the sole issue and its controlled by the apple IOS. This is without a doubt a massively huge world wide Apple mistake and its Apples responsibility to fix this a year ago! Why a trillion dollar company cant test for this in an hour like i did is beyond reprehensible. Absolutely ridiculous this being allowed to effect millions of users daily.

Shamefull.

incorrect. This thread is about both downloaded and streaming video issues via Apple HDMI lightening connector. Streaming is the only part Apple has fixed in past year. Downloads are still completely broken for video.

As my prior post had already concluded using the official Apple HDMI lightning connector, this missing video has only been fixed for streaming content in latest IOS 16.7.2. Same ongoing bug still exists when trying to play already downloaded content. No video, only audio when playing any downloaded content.

All apps -netflix, amazon, apple+ and crave show same repeatable no video available on downloaded content but will play same content now when streaming. Broken for all downloads means its the same Apple playback bug in IOS thats still broken.

Logic dictates it looks like Apple has moved onto USB-C and wont bother fixing this world wide broken lighting HDMI connector issues any more. Not enough noise from customers likely the reason. Real pain because my $2000.00 over priced iPhones 14 pro max is useless for traveling anymore video wise. Sadly Its Apples new way of doing things but ill keep complaining and standing up for my consumer rights.
