Apple TV on mute/no volume

I have an Apple TV with a Siri remote. Earlier today I was able to stream a show with volume, like always. But now, several hours later, I can’t get volume on any app on my Apple TV. I have restarted the Apple TV and played around with the audio setting. I’ve also tried using the remote app in my phone which shows I’m on mute, but doesn’t allow me to unmute. Sound is otherwise working if I’m not in Apple TV. I’d like to avoid a full reset if possible but at this point I don’t know what else to try.

That is not what that means. The Mute button/icon always has the slash through it, regardless of the mute state. The button/icon is grayed out because the software didn’t detect support for muting through the software remote.

For Volume Control through the software remote, you will need an AV receiver that supports volume control from other HDMI devices (i.e. the Apple TV box) through CEC. Not all audio systems support that form of indirect communication. No TVs that I am aware of support this.

Please detail your audio setup. Do you use your TV’s built-in speakers, or something else?
