Exchange iCal issue unable to verify account or password

Hi, today my iMac 2017 with OS High Sierra stopped syncing exchange calendars in iCal, with error: unable to verify account or password.

iPhone and iPad seems NOT to be affected too.

Does anyone experienced this issue too? Thanks, Stefano

Hi webbsam99,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with your Exchange calendars syncing on your Mac. We'd like to help.

Have you checked to see if the iCloud Keychain is correct on your Mac? It's possible, if you made a change to your password, that it is holding on to the old password. That could explain the error message you're seeing.

Then, check out this resource as you may need to remove and add your calendar back to your Accounts: Access iCloud, Google, and other calendars in Calendar on Mac - Apple Support

Remove an account
If you no longer want to use an account in any app, including Calendar, you can remove the account.
Note: If you use iCloud Keychain, and you remove an account (other than your primary iCloud account), you’re asked whether to remove the account from your other Mac computers that use iCloud Keychain, or just turn off all the account features on this Mac.
1. Choose Calendar > Account
2.Select the account you want to remove.
3. Deselect the Calendar checkbox.

Add an account
1. Choose Calendar > Add Account
2. Select the account type
3. then follow the onscreen instructions

For information about adding an iCloud account, see Set up iCloud on your Mac. For information about adding other accounts, see Add an account.

Set up your iOS devices to use the same account, so that your calendars stay up to date across all those devices and your Apple Watch. For more information, see the “Get started” section of the user guide for iPhoneiPad, or iPod touch. For a device that doesn’t use the latest iOS version, get the user guide from the Apple Support manuals website.

Each account you add is listed separately in the sidebar. If the sidebar isn’t showing, choose View > Show Calendar List or click Calendars in the toolbar.

Hope that helps.

Take care!

Update: the issue is caused by iCal release, Mail release and other apps used as clients with Exchange. In High Sierra the authentication for these apps cannot be done by Microsoft auth-service (in Mojave, Catalina and up and recent IOS this service is supported). Without Microsoft auth service, third part client cannot sync anymore with Exchange; Microsoft is deprecating older security methods. This new feature can be suspended until the end of this year by tenant admins in Exchange admins settings; it’t quite difficult and should be done only by professionals, but by 2023 older OS won’t support exchange sync anymore.

I think Apple should release updated also for older OS or IOS to avoid several issues.

thanks, webbsam

Hi, thanks.

the problem seems to happen only in High Sierra, because IOS and Catalina/Big Sur are working correctly.

I tried deselecting the calendars (two different exchange accounts with NO password changes) and selecting back. iCal asks me again the password; once digited the system returns the error “unable to verify account or password”. I think it could be a security upgrade from Microsoft, deprecating older protocols used by some clients, such as iCal on older OS like High Sierra or back. Anybody else didn’t suffer the same error?

thanks a lot
