In Disk Utility, you MUST select the device by its immutable manufacturer-given device-name. if not shown, choose View: show all devices

Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support

if it refuses to erase (dues to foreign file system contents) just ask again immediately, without changing anything.
