With Pages 12.1 I am unable to open Pages templates created in iWork9. Can open normal documents, just not templates. There is discussion from several years back about this same message, but not regarding templates. Any ideas other than rebuild them from scratch?

Pages '09 and Pages v5 thru 12.1 have different internal document formats and on the first install of the rewritten Pages version, it will attempt to migrate those Pages '09 templates whose features it supports into the contemporary Pages template format. There are Pages '09 features that simply are still not supported in Pages v12.1 with no means to migrate them using the contemporary Pages.
You will get the following dialog on attempting to open an unmigrated Pages '09 template:
Selecting anything other than Cancel will result in a secondary dialog:
and if you persist in clicking OK:
All to imply that you are done and cannot migrate or use this Pages '09 template.

All true! A simple workaround occurred to me, but not until I had spent some time sweating over this. I opened the templates in the iWork9 version, saved them as normal documents, opened them in Pages v.12.1 and then saved-as to template format there. Some slight funkiness in that the templates open with guides and inspector visible although both were hidden when the template was created. VERY small nag and something I will be able to live with.

"Untitled" can't be opened right now. Pages couldn't read the file.
