iTunes vs. EAC when ripping audio cds

Due to the quality of audio cds i have access to (moderately to severely scratched), I'm looking into other ripping softwares and need to know how they compare to iTunes ripping ability.

I have used iTunes to rip since I got my first ipod (2005ish?) and hate that it has no ability to check the quality of the music from cds. I find myself needing to listen to every track to make sure it doesn't skip and reloading the songs that do. It takes more time than I am willing to put into it.

I have looked into other softwares to rip and Exact Audio Copy caught my eye because it will read the disk multiple times to make sure it is as exact as possible. my only concerns are the formats it can rip to and its security (the database that holds information on other people's rips of the same cd, while useful, got me a little worried about the safety of the software)

I actually swear by EAC and a lot of Audiophiles swear by it also. As for security, I'm pretty sure it's safe. I have to download info from the database for CD data and to check the encode has completed correctly. I also upload my ripping info to them as well, it makes sure that future rips are done accurately.

I've had to do about 800 ish CD's and it was a very helpful tool. I'll always use it for the odd CD, i've never the need to use iTunes.
