Macbook: change 2 factor authentication from iPad to phone number

First time MacBook user. The 2 factor authentication defaulted to sending a notification to my old iPad, which I don't generally carry with me. I need the 2 factor system to text my phone number, which Apple ID has on file. I can't find anything in the AppleID/security menu to make such a selection. I use an android phone. Any advice?

Two-factor authentication is designed to automatically send the notification to all of your trusted devices, including the one that you are signing into, although my experience has been that it intermittently misses sending to one or more. It will only send a text if you request one each time. There is also an option to request the code from Apple Preferences on your Mac.
