My AW Series 3 got bricked when trying to update to 8.7.1. Could you please offer an official answer and tell us what the **** is going on? It's disgusting that things got to the level where Apple now releases updates that even contain bugs. Rapidly becoming a new Microsoft.

I have same problem too. Also we can not use our watches just as a watch neither updated nor paired. The support center did not help. They have no idea what is going on. Who do we need to talk I don't know but apple is damaging our apple watch3... Please solve this problem !!!
reset or delet your watch first and then turn off turn on the watch, also update your iphone last version 16.1 it will work. i can use my watch now and updated is complete.

Stop sending same steps to us!! fix the update problem. You don't have any right to brick our watches. this steps are not working! please take an aw3 and try all steps and lets see are those things really work...! please be realistic.
All these steps are useless. My Series 3 is bricked due to a bug in 8.7.1 PLEASE RELEASE A FIX SOON. This goes against consumer rights

It appears to be working now
Cancel the Watch update and update your iPhone to iOS 16.1 first. , then try it again.
On your iPhone look in settings- General - software update - install 16.1
i did that today and i still get the same issue.
It does work now. It seems the problem was 16.0.3 then
watchOS 8.7.1
