Why does the HomePod sound go silent for a few seconds every few minutes?
Hello Anne McWilliams,
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
If your HomePod is going silent, there are a few steps you can try as a general starting point. First, restart HomePod: If HomePod mini or HomePod isn't responding - Apple Support
"Restart HomePod mini or HomePod
If that doesn't help, we recommend a reset next, which can be helpful if HomePod isn't responding. Check out this link for the steps: Reset HomePod - Apple Support

HomePod mini Cutting Out - Fixed
I had this same hugely frustrating problem as well. All suggestions to remedy this issue failed to resolve the problem. Until I considered the bit rate for streaming in the Music settings on iPhone.
In iPhone Music settings Wifi streaming is automatically set to High Quality AAC 256 kbps. I thought that might be the problem. I changed to Lossless Audio ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz. I got immediate results - problem solved. No reoccurrence of cutting out on HomePod mini since I made that change. The sound quality is also much improved, actually quite impressively so.
NOTE: My internet connection speed is strong at 475 Mbps, perhaps that helps with Lossless, however it did not help with the High Quality Audio in Music settings for streaming from iPhone to HomePod mini.
Good Luck. Hope this helps.
