I'm trying to help a colleague in England. When I command-click on a file in the finder, the first 2 items on the resulting menu are Open and Open with. When she does this, the first 2 items are Rename and Move to Bin (i.e. Trash), and Open and Open with are missing. What is going on?

Command-click or Control-click? Control-click brings up the contextual menu, also visible with the right mouse button by default with a two button mouse.
Sorry, it’s Control-click/Right-click. Brain fog.
They may not be doing it from the Finder, and instead using the open/save dialog box. Make sure they know the difference.
That answers my question. I didn’t notice an Open button in their screen shot hidden under a menu.
