Macbook - "other" storage and filling up

I have a 2018 macbook air running 10.15 catalina, with 121gb flash storage.

The problem is that my storage is almost full, with most of it, meaning about 100 gb of space is used up by "other". Now the issue is that i can't get rid of this "other" space, at it is not accessible.

Furthermore, another problem is that at a given moment where i have less than 300 mb free for example, after i restart my macbook i'll have around 2-3gb free. And that usually fills up again until i retsart it and it's back to normal.

Can i get more details on these two problems, what may have cause this to happen, and also some solutions?

Thanks

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

Please read See used and available storage space on your Mac - Apple Support. Pay particular attention to the description of System Data.

  • What Apple used to label "Other" is now labeled "System Data".

A potential solution may be to back up that Mac with Time Machine, assuming you aren't already doing that. To learn how to use Time Machine please read Back up your files with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support. You may find that subsequent to creating that backup, the "Other" space will have been reduced..

Hello -cdn-,

We understand that you have some concerns with your storage. Details about the storage and how to manage it can be found at Free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support Some of that includes:

  • Delete musicmoviespodcasts, or other media, especially if it's media that you can stream or download again as needed.
  • Delete files in your Downloads folder. Open this folder from the Dock, or by choosing Go > Downloads from the menu bar in the Finder.
  • If you use the Mail app for your email, choose Mailbox > Erase Junk Mail from the menu bar in Mail. Also choose Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items.
  • If you use your Mac to back up your iPhone or iPad, you can delete old backups.
  • Uninstall apps that you no longer use.
  • If your Mac is set up for multiple users, delete users that no longer need access to your Mac. Or ask them to follow the steps in this article after logging in to their user account. Also check the Users folder on Macintosh HD for any undeleted data belonging to deleted users.
  • Check the Users folder on Macintosh HD for any shared files that you no longer need to share.

If you don't want to delete certain files, you might be able to save space by compressing them. Then expand them when you need to use them again.

Did you empty the Trash? When you move a file to the Trash, its storage space doesn't become available until you empty the Trash.

Other storage contains things such as the operating system and temporary files and caches. It should be self managing - like you see when restarting - and clear space as necessary. Are you ever getting alerts about low storage?

Thanks!

Hello, thanks for your reply.

I have already checked the tips on how to free up storage on my mac, and did that already.

But, the thing is, the "other" storage takes up about 70% of my space, and i consider that to be unusual. I believe that the issue is that it is not actually self managing properly. And yes, I do get alerts about low storage every now and then, but that goes away after a restart.

I have also attached an image, to better illustrate the amount of space that is occupied by other storage. Any other tips?
