Macbook Pro Key repeat problem

I've had my MacBook Pro for almost 2 years now but it's recently started to have keyboard repeat issues. The keys are not physically stuck but behave like they are, in a totally random manner - including the delete key and the space bar. Messages will end up lookinggggggg a bittttttt like thissssssssssssss. Very annoying.
This tends to be accompanied by a sluggish trackpad too. Then after a while - it behaves normally again.
I have nothing else attached - anyone any ideas?

Thanks

I've had the same problem for two years and it drives meeeeeeee nutssssssssss...... Apparently it's something to do with the orange ribbon under the battery. If you fold a bit of card in half and put it on top of the ribbon, then put the battery back in place, it does help. At least it did for about 6 months, but now it's back again.
Apple deny there's a problem, but it's widespread and it's definitely a hardware fault that Apple don't want to have to fix on 100,000 MacBooks.
My advice is that the second you feel the keys sticking, stop typing. Look at the Caps Lock button - wait for it to flash green a few times, then you're safe to type again. If you keep typing before the green light flashes, it freezes completely. Then you have to close the lid, push the battery down hard, wait for the disc to stop spinning and then open the lid again.

I have precisely the same problem ibmford is describing in bootcamp. Inevitably, I get a key-repeat issue followed by a loss of multitouch functionality. I have only encountered this on Macrumors.com's forums, and that person also had a 4,1 generation MBP. I suspect it is particular to this model notebook, and as such will not be fixed.

Oh well. I'm sure some one will hasten to point out that I can just run OS X exclusively (where the problem doesn't occur). Instead, I just won't buy a Mac next time. Doesn't make sense to pay a premium to have the ability to dual-boot, only to discover that Windows runs only with limited functionality.

OK. I've had this problem on my MacBook Pro. Only 2 years old. Took it in and complained about 6 months ago and they replaced the logic board for free even though it was out of warranty as it was a "known issue". New logic board means a clean install of system and I carefully put back my files just in case it was a software problem. SUCCESS. Problem solved for 6 months. Came back last week. Repeating letters, missing curser, sticking spacebar. Went back in to Apple today and they tell me it is software related. I don't think so somehow. But it is worth keeping up with this thread to see how many of us there are.

I took my MacBook in to an Apple store recently to get a CPU fan replaced (it was making a terrible noise), and I talked to one of their techs about my keyboard problems. He recommended in addition to replacing the fan, also replacing what's called the "flex cable." It's the cable that goes from the keyboard and trackpad. There's a chip embedded in the cable which governs the input from the keyboard and trackpad to the logic circuitry. Replacing this cable was fairly cheap, too, about $14 for the part. The part that was expensive was the bench fee, $40 (for labor), but I think that rate is pretty good for this kind of work.

Replacing the cable fixed the problem. No more random key repeat problems. No more missing typed keys. And so far I haven't had a problem with the keyboard and trackpad locking up on me, forcing me to reboot. So problem solved!

I just started having the same issue. I am convinced it is software as I just upgraded to Lion and VMWare Fusion 4. Initial versions of Fusion (3.0) had similar keyboard issues. I don't see the problem in native mac applications, but then again I don't use them nearly as much either. Does anyone else use Fusion 4? My problem is trying to figure out which software is causing the issue. It's either Lion, Windows 7, or Fusion 4. Odds are it's not Lion as the mac side seems OK, but can't completely rule it out. Any thoughts or help on this?

Thanks...

Just an observation, but maybe what you describe was going on before Lion. You said it occurred on VMWare 3 as well, though I don't know what you upgraded first. My keyboard problems were intermittant. When they first started happening they weren't that noticeable. Sometimes the keyboard would miss a key I'd pressed, and I thought I just wasn't pressing hard enough. So initially I blamed myself. It was only later that the problems were getting worse and I realized it couldn't just be me. It's something that can creep up on you.

When it happened to me, I was running Leopard and VMWare Fusion 2. I was using Mac apps. most of the time, but I'd see it in both Mac and Windows apps. What fixed all of these problems for me was taking my MacBook in to an Apple store and having them replace what's called the "flex cable," at least on my model of MacBook, which I got in 2008. Though it might be a different problem given your model, so it might be better just to tell them what's going wrong. The flex cable is a cable inside the MacBook's case that connects the trackpad and keyboard to the logic board. It has a chip embedded in it that has been known to go out, causing the problems described in this thread. The price for the cable was $14 (though I did it several months ago). The part that's expensive is the bench fee they charge for doing it, $40. When it comes to repair work of this nature, this price is pretty normal. If you get it in to them under your warranty, this kind of repair is covered by it.

I have the same problem since about 2-3 weeks. I logged into this support page thinking that I would find solutions. All that I have found here is more people with the same problem. At first, it started with the volume control key being stuck in the max position. Then it evolved into a spacebar key being stuck and webpages opening and scrolling down to the bottom without any means of scrolling up to the top. As well pull-down menus not remaining open. The only thing that I seems to temporarily fix this is "restart". I hope Apple fixes this problem soon as I use my macbook on a daily basis. PLEASE APPLE, FIX THIS SOON.

As a follow up, I am certain this is a software issue. What I can't tell is if it is an Apple OS issue or VMWare issue. I have noticed that when typing in my e-mail in Outlook on a Win7 VM that the repetitive characters occur whenever the sound for new mail plays. I can recreate it EVERY time. It's like interrupt conflicts were in 1980's PC's. Nobody seems very proactive in investigating it and it seems to just blend into the other considerable Lion issues. It is extremely annoying, so much so that I am considering trying Parallels and/or reverting to Snow Leopard where this did not happen....

Hmmm. I tend to agree it's probably software. Not sure what part though. Random trackpad freezes, random key stuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk and repeats. Console errors typically WebProcess[55065]: INSERT-HANG-DETECTED.

10.6.8 server on early 2011 MBP 17 only 4 months old.

I'm inclined to blame safari but also running firefox, maybe rosetta - will test more......

My late-2008 MacBook Pro, with Lion, has just started having this problem. While I have Fusion, I don't run it much, and the problems I've been having have been in regular Mac programs. It's impressive how disabling this key repeat is - I can't change users, because I can't log in. I can't shut down if another user is running, because I have to enter your password. This happens to me sometimes when the lid is shut and I'm using an external monitor and BlueTooth keyboard, so I'm pretty **** sure it's not a key on the keyboard (and it continues if I power down the BlueTooth keyboard). I have to use the power button to do a hard shutdown. The end result is effectively a system crash. Aren't we beyond that in Maclandia?
