Depending upon your iPad model, the iPad will either have a Lightning or USB-C port - and may therefore require either an Adapter or USB hub to connect the USB Storage device. If your iPad has a Lightning port, you’ll need an Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter:

When using external storage, it is often necessary to simultaneously connect your iPad Power Adapter - as many USB storage devices require more power than an iPad Lightning port can alone supply. The Lightning to USB3 Camera adapter has both a USB Type-A port with which to connect storage or other compatible USB accessories - and a pass-through Lighting port used exclusively to connect the iPad Power Adapter or USB PowerBank.
To be recognised by iPadOS, the attached USB storage device must be formatted to FAT, FAT32, exFAT, APFS or HFS+ with a single partition. Microsoft NTFS and other proprietary device formatting are not supported.
