How to change password on 2009 MacBook Pro when you forgot your master password

I cannot get into my 2009 MacBook Pro 15”

It is set up to reset the password with a “Master Password” which, of course, I also do not remember.

I have purchased a new M2 MacBook Air and already have an IPad 9th Gen. I know the password currently associated with my Mac ID. I thought the new password would get me into the 2019 but alas, no joy and I am now locked out.

On my IPad I see only my newer apple products: M2, IPad 9, IPad 7. I am guessing this is an OS issue. God knows which OS is on the 2009 MacBook Pro.

I probably have files/images on the old MacBook I want to retrieve. It tells me it has not been backed up in a gazzilion months. How do I get into the old MacBook Pro?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi LaSuperchica,

While unfamiliar with a master password, you may instead be referring to a firmware password. What is a firmware password on Mac? covers these in detail as well as how they are used. If this is preventing you from resetting your user password, per Set a firmware password on your Mac:

If you forgot your firmware password
If you can't remember your firmware password, schedule an in-person service appointment with an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Bring your Mac to the appointment, and bring your original receipt or invoice as proof of purchase.

Regards.
