Every time I try to type on the iPad ((IpadOS 15.7) the keyboard pops up in the middle of the screen. Makes it very difficult to enter text. Yes, I use the little black keyboard icon on the bottom right to turn the keyboard off, but as soon as I start typing, the keyboard pops up again. Very frustrating. Any suggestions? BTW: It's a fairly new problem. Thank you for your help.

Presumably you refer to the Floating keyboard?
To easily return the new Floating Keyboard to the normal on-screen keyboard presentation, use the two-finger “zoom” gesture (i.e., the reverse of the two-finger “pinch”).
If the Split Keyboard is restored instead of the full on-screen keyboard, you can either use two fingers (one on each of the two half-keyboards) and swipe the two halves together - or touch-and-hold the “keyboard” key, then slide your finger to the Merge & Dock option and release.

Tried Lotus Pilot's suggestion, for which I thank him. Regretfully didn't work. Zooming out by spreading fingers did nothing. iPhone works fine; with kb on the bottom of the screen. The keyboard popping up in the middle of the iPad screen every time I try to enter text is a recent problem; else, iPad worked fine for years. Did an update cause the problem. Poltergeists? Thanks.
