Whatsapp Incoming Video Call with Face ID

I called my friend over Whataspp via video call and she was in a dark room. She's an iphone 11 user. She said she couldn’t put her video on as her phone requires face recognition and the room was dark. As a result when she picked up the call her video was turned off but mine was on. Has anyone experienced this before? As far as I know one can pick up a video call from whatsapp without face recognition. Can anyone enlighten me please?
