Apple Maps goes back to portrait orientation after a long hands free call

I have an iPhone 14 with latest OS. I use a dash mount. I used a h/w GPS for years and prefer landscape orientation. It works great and is the most accurate in terms of location and ETA than everything I've used since 2004. When I make an extended hands free call, I lose the Maps screen and only see the phone screen. That's aggravating but not my main issue. If I'm on a short call the following does not happen. When on an extended call and hang up, the screen sometimes is locked and sometimes not. Either way once Maps is up and running again, Maps is in vertical orientation. Cycling between vertical and back to horizontal does not fix problem. Only restarting Maps from the screen and restarting the route lets the display go back to horizontal. I've done everything I know to do to unlock orientation. Perhaps this is setting I've missed. And while I'm here, is there a way to have the phone call display in the background and Maps on top while navigating and on a phone call at the same time? This is very frustrating. Thanks for any advice.

Hello aestewart,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you've taken some great troubleshooting steps for this Maps and Phone issue so far. Make sure you've taken all applicable steps from If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open - Apple Support since this impacts only the Maps app. For your convenience, those steps are as follows.

1 Close and reopen the app
Force the app to close. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.

2 Restart your device
Restart your iPhone or restart your iPad. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.

3 Check for updates
To see if updates are available for the app, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, then scroll down to see if updates are available. If updates aren't available for the app, update the software on your iPhone or iPad.

4 Delete the app, then redownload it
Delete the app. When you do this, you might lose data that was stored in the app. Then redownload the app. Then check to see if the problem with the app is fixed.

If the same continues, it may be best to reach out to Apple Support since Maps is an Apple-developed app.

Best of luck.
