Bluetooth died with update to MacOS Ventura and Bluetooth Controller will not power back on

Hello all,

I have a 2018 Mac Mini that has luckily never had a bluetooth issue. I made the mistake of installing Ventura the day it was released (I normally wait a few weeks to let someone else figure out/get terrorized by all the weird one-off bugs). From the moment Ventura was installed the bluetooth has been "off". Clicking the bluetooth toggle in any of the numerous locations like the menu bar and system preferrences shows that bluetooth is trying to start (little spinning icon but it never switches to "on")

I have tried all the workarounds like rolling back to Monterey (still dead), reset the SMC, and reset the NVRAM, sudo pkill bluetoothd and blueutil to try and power on bluetooth. BlueUtil shows the power state as 255 but the BlueUtil documentation gives two options: 0 is off and 1 is on. I also ran Apple Diagnostics and it gave the ADP000 all clear.

I opened the system report and the following is shown for the Bluetooth controller.

 Bluetooth Controller:

 Address: NULL

 State: Off

 Chipset: BCM_4350C2

 Discoverable: Off

 Firmware Version: v0 c0

 Product ID: 0x0001

Supported services: 0x382039 < HFP AVRCP A2DP HID Braille AACP GATT Serial >

 Transport: UART

 Vendor ID: 0x004C (Apple)

Any insights?

-Michael

I had this exact issue today on my 2019 Vantura Mac Pro - as a matter of fact I found this thread by searching on the output of system_profiler SPBluetoothDataType from the terminal:

 Bluetooth Controller:

 Address: NULL

 State: Off

 Chipset: BCM_4350C2

 Discoverable: Off

 Firmware Version: v0 c0

 Product ID: 0x0001

Supported services: 0x382039 < HFP AVRCP A2DP HID Braille AACP GATT Serial >

 Transport: UART

I would try to turn on bluetooth from the top menu - hit the oval switch and it would look like it was turned on but when looking at the blutooth settings the icon would just spin and there where no devices present. Of note when I used opt shift and then clicked on Bluetooth settings it would indicate the bluetooth was not discoverable which would make sense, since the service was not stated. I also tried sudo pkill bluetoothd with a restart and sudo pkill bluetooth with a restart. The only thinbg this achieved as setting the bluetooth switch back to off. Also of note this whole time the bluetooth icon in the top menu had a left to right slash through it incidating it was disfucntional. Nothing suggested online made any difference for correcting this situation. Bluetooth simply was not functional and could not be turned on. I even went as far as unplgging all (and I have many - above 20 -- as this is part of a music studio) USB devices (which is complete garbage in my opinion but I tried it along with multiple reboots). One thing that might have brought this on was I was listening to Airpod Pros outside and a couple times I walked beyond the listening range. I found all this out about 10 minutes before a video meeting and found that my Airpor Pros would not connect and my Bluetooth was non functional.

Here is what I had to do for the fix. Reboot the Mac Pro Ventura into recovery mode with cmd r held down during reboot. then chose the reinstallOS into the original target disk. This is very poorly explained online - it's called a step by step guide -> use it Apple, it is too easy to completely hork your system by making the wrong choice during the process. But doing this reinstalled Ventura into the target disk without changing any settings or uninstalling/overwriting any applications and all the machine settings were intact. It took aobut an hour give or take. Another important point when doing this procedure you need to have a keyboard and that is directly connected to the machine. When the Ventura OS reinstall was complete the bluetooth sedrvice fired right up and it could discover my Airpod Pros as well as my smart/magic keyboard and tracker. Thisis now the current output of system_profiler SPBluetoothDataType from the terminal:

    Bluetooth Controller:

     Address: F8:FF:C2:0C:48:45

This was the only way I could find to restore the Bluetooth service without a complete rebuild (this was close enough) but thankfully I didn't have to reinstall 156 apps and reconfigure the machine post a completely fresh install. the machine was exaclty the same configured with three huge screens and all logins and settings intact. The only thing I had to do was pair my Airpod Pros again. I would cross reference this outlined process with other references online for OS recovery it is tricky and nerve wracking requires patience. I have done rebuilds many, many times so I am familiar with the process. Start with an older cheese grater mac pro if you have to to get a feel for it. I would not reccomend this for a first timer unless you are willing to completely reinstall your OS from scratch and reinstall all your apps if you make a mistake. But I will tell you that it worked and restored the Bluetooth service to functionallity (running) when nothing else would work.

Had the same thing, first time I thought this has got to be a scam, someone claiming to be from Apple support calling me in the UK from Texas so didn't answer. Then got an e-mail, checked it all out and definitely seemed legit so messaged Josh back through the Apple website and said call again, he did and like you, took a load of captures of the issue. Hopefully it will help them get this sorted.

I had Josh from Austin Texas also reach out to me. On the third time of trying he got hold of me. He's captured some of the issue around the fact that all my bluetooth accessories are acting up. Disconnecting, and stuttering. Driving me up the wall. Jumping between the tracker pad and the mouse, all Apple products. All since Ventura upgrade. 13.0.1 didn't improve it.

Josh gave me a UK number to call to talk to a senior advisor about the issue. After being put on hold I was politely told to contact Josh again???? I think I prefer the USA support.

I've had the same issues and was watching this post in hopes that my issue could be solved. I too, did everything. My apple rep said "oh, I've never heard of this!" and made me sound like an outlier, which I know I am not. I too have been doing data dumps for weeks now with no results. Nothing even to try.

Have any of you completely reinstalled system from scratch? (wipe drive?) I am trying to avoid that.

I have a 2017 imac. And I too, tried everything!!

Apple-- please help us!

This doesn't provide you with a solution, but my tracker, mouse and keyboard seems to be working ok again (I have a Mac Mini). All that I've done since the Ventura upgrade is have a session with Josh in Texas who logged the instances where I had lag, stutter and diconnection of the three apple devices. I was told to contact the UK Support line by Josh.

AlI got from them was the brush off from the UK 0800 support number. They said I should go back to Josh, who told me to go back to the UK support....... I've not had time to do so. But its seems to be working. Sorry. I just hope it continues working.

Touching bases. Total silence from Apple this week. Not sure if it was Josh but a guy who wasn’t part of support had me do a data capture so they can see what’s up. Haven’t heard from actual support since the week before.

Apple,

Anything happening here? I feel like I wasted a ton of money on the Apple Magic Keyboard, Apple trackpad, AirPods, HomePods and a MacMini.

What is the plan? I’m a recent Apple convert but it looks like I drank the wrong cool-air. Any plans for fixing your broken ecosystem?

This is disappointing because there is now NO resale value in my Mac mini. Not even sure if replacing the logic board would work as this sounds like software will kill the new one.

I hear you brother.

been faithful to Apple but within one year :

  • lost 512gigs of photos cause Apple wasn’t aware of bug (most of people still don’t know it) related to reading sim profile which may lock you out of your phone and stop accepting your passcode ,
  • lost MacBook Pro (it was 10 years old but it was a killer after I upgraded sad and ram myself , sadly they couldn’t determine what’s wrong+they don’t sell batteries for such old models+even if they did determine and sold the batteries , they could refuse fixing because of “unauthorised” modifications [after the warranty expired 8 years ago anyway 🤣) ,
  • my Mac mini (latest purchase) got Bluetooth bricked ,

oh! Have I mentioned that my brand new Apple Watch Series 7 doesn’t respond properly to accessibility gestures for 20-40% of the time ? And that my AirPods Pro sometimes connect to wrong device ? 🤣🫡

this is ridiculous .

If I’ll be asked to pay for fixing it then I’m moving to android and windows with Linux on partitions permanently. At least I’ll save lot of money on hardware and repairs .

this is an absurd when hundreds or thousands of people experience a failure due to system update and the company responsible is telling them that hardware “seems to be breaking at exact moment of mentioned update”. 😡

Hi Mike, I just received the same message (to bring computer in for hardware issue). This is so unacceptable. I am a proud apple owner and have owned apple products since they first came out. This situation is extraordinarily disappointing. How can everyones hardware fail at this install?

I am wondering if they were able to fix your issue? Did you get your computer back yet?

Nov 27, 2022 7:25 AM in response to MikeontheMike

Hi there,

Apple said it will take a week to get the new logic board in and then another few days to install. For that I get the pleasure of Paying for the repair as well.

At this point I am not buying Apple products anymore. If they aren’t willing to fix what they break then I am going elsewhere.

Fun fact. Since OS Mojave we have not been able to use external Bluetooth dongles if the Macs Bluetooth module fails! On a OC I could go spend $20 for one and be back in business. Apples model looks like they built the “trap” where you either pay up for a proprietary fox performed by them or take the hit and stop buying Apple. It hurts. When everything works right it is seamless but one little thing and the who house of cards fails. In/near my desk (and Mac mini) Apple Magic Keyboard, apple trackpad, AirPods, HomePod, Apple TV and most of it became worthless in one Upgrade to Ventura.

Hoping Apple comes to their senses before I have to pay the repair bill. I’m paying to get it fixed and will probably sell it while it is “new” as I have very little confidence in Apple products at this point.

I would happily be paying a repair if the Bluetooth died when I dropped the laptop or one day it just stopped working but for an UPGRADE TO A CURRENT OS kills Bluetooth and many people are reporting the issue then it was a hardware failure caused by poor software design and testing. Are they purposely killing Intel Macs so we have to buy new Apple M series Macs?

Nov 27, 2022 7:31 AM in response to MikeontheMike

Thanks for reply. It is clearly a failure on their part. I am looking at buying a replacement. When I first reported this issue and told "senior advisor" I was ready to be a new mac, he laughed and said, "oh you don't have to go that far, we will help you fix it." Ha! My computer works just fine. I dont need to buy a new mac. As you said, the update causes a failure. We should all be fairly compensated for repair. Is it a bluetooth card that needs replacing or a whole logic board?

As you said, Apple get back to me saying is a problem with the logic board, they asked me to pay for the new logic board and all the repair costs. I really don't have the money to pay for a new logic board and especially if it's their fault. I will buy a mouse and a keyboard that can connect to a wireless receiver. This is really disappointing, especially when apple brags about its customer support. I hope a new upgrade repairs the issue but at this time I'm more afraid that something else is going to break.

Dec 22, 2022 8:15 AM in response to MikeontheMike

Exactly as with my 2018 model Mac Mini - bluetooth died during the update, was not able to log on again after it as I had to connect keyboard with USB and find another mouse. So far the support via email is useless, collecting logs, setting appointment to try something from the engineers (this was shut down, remove power, turn on again...).

I feel they are just ignoring this issue, I might raise a concern with consumer rights in Finland as the expected lifespan of electronics like computer is at least 4 years and mine was bought less than 4 years ago.
