iMac M1 2021 doesn't have internet connection

Hi

I'm using the new iMac M1 2021. I have no internet connection since Wednesday - I tried Ethernet, wi-fi, even hot-spot from the mobile Phone. Unsuccessful...

Please help me to solve this issue.

Thank you!

Mihai

Ok, thanks for the additional information.

Based on what you provided, I would suspect that the issue may be related to the network settings on your Mac. Specifically, any proxy or VPN settings.

To start:

  • Are you using this Mac at your institution or accessing the institution remotely, using a VPN?
  • On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi or Ethernet (depending on how it is connected to the local network) > Advanced > Proxies tab. No option should be selected, except "Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV)"
  • Go back to the TCP/IP tab. What are the values for Configure IPv4, IPv4 Address, & Router?
  • Finally, go to the DNS tab. Are there one or two IP addresses listed under DNS Servers? Are they grayed-out?

From the DNS information, I see that your Mac is getting its DNS from the local network.

As such, I suggest the following to verify if it will resolve the Internet issue. I would like for you to temporarily assign the following IP address to the DNS section of System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi or Ethernet > DNS > 1.1.1.1

This would bypass your institutions DNS servers and use an external one. This address would be for the Cloudflare DNS servers.

If this resolves the issue, removing this setting and contact your institution's IT staff for further assistance with this matter.

Then the issue is with the institution's router or somewhere else over the Internet that is blocking your Mac.

Running a simple traceroute should be able to determine where that blockage could be.

For example, running the following command in the Terminal app, would trace the route between your Mac and the Apple servers: traceroute www.apple.com

A successful trace should show a number of router "hops" that would be made between them. If that trace hangs up somewhere in between is where the issue may reside.

You can certainly runs this test yourself, but I still think you need to work with your institution's IT staff to get this resolved. Good luck!

Even if your iMac cannot gain Internet access, can it still access resources on your local network?

What have you tried, so far yourself, to resolve this issue other than trying other connection methods? I'm assuming that none of your other devices are having issues accessing the Internet ... correct?

Finally, did you update/upgrade any software before this started happening?
