email does not load on wifi

Since I upgraded my phone to OS16, many emails will open only partially if I am on WiFi. I have three independent WiFi systems at my home, one on an Apple WiFi router, one on a Netgear Nighthawk Router, and one on a Comcast cable/WiFi system. The behavior of mail is similar on all of these. If I disable WFi while waiting for the mail content to load, it is instantly available as soon as I come back to the Mail app. This suggests that there is no problem with the Mail app, user accounts, passwords, etc.

Additionally, most email loads perfectly well. I have three email accounts set up on my phone, the native Mac account, Google mail, and a business account on a private server. The distinction appears to be whether the source is a distribution list or business account.

Other strange things are that exactly the same mails will load just fine on my M1 Airbook, which is up to date on OS and apps. I first had this issue on an iPhone 10, but the same problem continues on the iPhone 14 Pro Max that I just upgraded to.

In other words, this problem is tracking OS16 and little else.

Thoughts?

Well I may have found at least a partial solution. I went to Settings on my MacBook Air (M1) and turned off the Privacy option to Protect Mail Activity and Hide IP address. Subsequently the notification about mail being from a mailing list and loading content came back on my phone.

Yippee! If odd…

I am still unsure about weirdness on the News app. Maybe there’s some protection on that app’s settings. I don’t think I’ve seen an interaction of a setting on one device class with another before, if this holds up.

Hey there, Allan Angus!

Thanks so much for using Apple Support Communities.

When this happens, do you see a message about loading remote content at the top of the Mail app, by chance? The reason we ask is that your description of the issue is similar to that feature. This article here has more information about how that works and should help you see if this may be what you're experiencing: If you see 'Unable to load remote content privately' at the top of an email - Apple Support

If that doesn't look like it's related to this issue, then we would recommend removing one of the affected email accounts and adding it back from scratch. This can help resolve the issue by ensuring the most up to date settings possible. If doing this resolves the issue for one account, then you can repeat it on the others and see if you have luck there as well.

We hope that this information is helpful.

Have a great day!

I have now found instances of the same problem on the News app. The first time was an article from W magazine. Just below that was one from HuffPost that would not load the linked video from YouTube. I have included three screenshots. Notice the times on the dynamic island and clock at the top. The failures were on WiFi and the success was after disabling WiFi and falling back to ATT 5G.

For reference, here are a couple of screenshots showing the difference in a mail loading on WiFi versus ATT 5G on my 14 Pro Max.

The first is on WiFi. The second on 5G with WiFi turned off.

Both are emails to my Apple mail account without any changes to the setup I’ve used for years.

While I’m not happy with your suggestion to delete and recreate the account, I’ll try that and report back.

FYI, as I mentioned before, this began on my last phone, a V10 before I migrated to my current phone about a month ago
