Audio switches from headphones to speaker

New iPhone 12 with latest iOS. Wired headphones with Apple connector (yep it's clean :)

After inserting the headphone (the headphone icon shows in the right pull down menu) I then try to use apps such as BBC Sounds, iPlayer, and YouTube... But as soon as I press play, the headphone icon changes to a speaker and audio is routed to the speaker.

I then have to pull out the headphone and reinsert for the audio to remain playing via the headphone.

This is extremely annoying at times when I don't wish to cause a nuisance.

I've recently switched from Android, and this is a deal breaker for me... I've tried everything I can think of, and searched for answers.

Grateful if someone could give any ideas to fix otherwise I'll assume it's a faulty phobe.

Are you using an adapter with your iPhone 12 and headphones? We want to ensure we understand the setup you're using, so we can do our best to help.

If you haven't already, you can see if restarting your iPhone 12 may help, as a restart can refresh the software which can resolve unexpected issues:

"How to restart your iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, or later

Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

Hi Claire, thanks for replying :)

Yes I've tried restarting and also resetting too.

It's an official Apple lightening to 3.5mm adapter.

It's a really weird issue... if I play audio within 15 seconds of plugging in the headphone, adapter then it routes via headphone ok. If I wait longer than 15 seconds, the audio output switches to speaker. I can actually see the headphone icon in the pull down menu change from a headphone to a speaker.

This icon change happens as soon as you press play... and it reduces the audio output level to zero.

So I then have to pull out the adapter and plug in, and make sure I press play within 15 seconds.

Not really the Apple experience I was hoping for.

Tomorrow I will try to use another adapter to see if it's a h/w fault on my adapter.

I've tried different headphones too.

If it repeats the issue with a new adapter then it must be a h/w fault with the phone.
