AirPods Pro stop and disconnect when I receive an Apple Watch Notification

I use my iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods Pro when I run. I typically listen to streaming services such as Amazon Music when I do. When I receive a notification on my watch, it will often pause the audio and disconnect the AirPods so that the music plays on the iPhone when I hit the play button. This doesn’t happen all of the time, but does happen often.

Notifications include: Exercise Notifications (closing a ring, completing a goal or mile, etc.,) text messages.

I have updated the OS on the phone and watch, and the firmware on the AirPods several times.

I have unpaired/paired the watch and AirPods many times, as well as clearing my watch and setting it back up.

All three devices are in close proximity during use.

This has been an issue with my iPhone 12, iPhone 13, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Pro 2. Apple Watch model is M00D3LL/A (Series 6 wifi 44mm)

Hi there Cachec,

We'd like to learn more to see how we can help. Does this only happen when listening to audio from Amazon Music or are you experiencing this behavior with other music apps?

Just to be sure we're on the same page, which software versions are running on each of your devices? You'll find that listed next to Software Version is Settings > General > About on both your iPhone and Apple Watch.

Also, which firmware version is running on your AirPods Pro currently? Learn more here: About firmware updates for AirPods - Apple Support

Next, try turning off automatic switching with these steps to see if that helps:

If you don’t want your AirPods to switch automatically, do the following:
1. Wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device.
2. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings , then tap the name of your AirPods near the top of the screen.
3. Tap Connect to This [device], then tap When Last Connected to This [device].

You'll find these steps and more information here: Switch AirPods between Apple devices - Apple Support

Thanks!
