Google maps stops playing through Bluetooth when another app is opened

I’m unsure if this is because of updating my phone or something in the iOS update, but in the last month when I am using google maps in my car, if I open another app, the maps navigation switches to my phone. My settings are still the same and set to okay over Bluetooth, but as soon as you open an app, it won’t do that. Is there a way to fix this?
