screen on Mac has gone black

The screen on my daughter's Mac laptop has gone black. It's a relatively new device (c18 months old). She's travelling in Indonesia and Malaysia and we have Apple Care on the device. It looks as though it's a fairly common problem and isn't fixable? Has anyone experienced this and know what the best options are for her in terms of her location? There don't seem to be many Apple outlets/service points in her location.
