iPad not charging thru powered USB hub

If not using its own charger, the iPad needs to be connected to a high-power USB 2 connection capable of outputting higher current than 500mA (not higher voltage).

iPad needs 2 Amps (or 2000 milli-Amps), 4X the amount of a USB port. That's why it comes with its own AC adaptor. (And the iPhone micro adaptor won't work either - it's only 1 A)

The iPad requires more voltage than is normally put out by a standard USB port.
Even if the hub is powered, it is probably only outputting normal USB voltage.

This means the iPad will very slowly charge-if the screen is off(biggest power draw). Only way to test, plug it in to hub, turn off screen, come back half hour later.

I always charge my iPad with a powered hub. It will say "not charging" when the iPad is on because the hub don't put out enough current to run the iPad and charge it at the same time.

I leave my sleeping iPad plugged in the powered hub overnight and it is fully charged in the morning. The hub I have will charge the iPad even when my computer is off.

I agree with oldspook and johnathan - the iPad will probably charge on the hub, but it will charge VERY SLOWLY. Also, it will still show "not charging" even if it is. This is how mine works when plugged into a USB port.

If you want to charge it quickly, you're gonna have to plug it into an outlet and forget the USB port charging.

Thanks lisfolks. This answers my question exactly before I asked it (sometimes search can help). I connection my iPad via a powered hub and even though it claims that it's "Not Charging" up by the battery icon, it does charge.

The iPad will charge with standard high power(500 mAmps) USB port but not as fast as the included charger.
Also, it will not charge while it is being used on a the above USB.

Do you have any other devices connected to this hub?
