Word document shows read only when downloading via Safari in macOS Monterey.

Office 365-word document shows read only when downloading via Safari in macOS Monterey(12.6).

I've tested this on different machines and got the same issue.

The issue is only when downloading via Safari. Chrome and Firefox do not present this issue.

The only way I can open the word document using finder after navigating to the download folder.

Please check the attached screenshot

  • Using Safari's 'Show Downloads' button in the toolbar, double-click to open the file.
  • The file opens in MS Word as read-only.

.

Has anyone been able to fix this issue?

Hi Sheree_P

Thanks for your response.

But the issue is related to the Safari browser. I am only getting "read-only" message when I click the word file directly from the "Downloads" window in Safari.

The same word file is working fine in Mac finder and another web browser (firefox, Google chrome, etc)preview on the same machine.

I've downloaded different word files using safari and tested on different mac machines and got the same issue. I think this is a common issue of safari in Mac OS Monterey.

Hey tvrmsk,

To help isolate the issue, open the Microsoft Word app. Afterwards, tap on the Open tab and either browse to the location of the file, or locate it by searching for it. Check to see if the document shows up read-only.

If so, there may be a permissions settings related to that particular document. Here's a Microsoft article that may help: Why did my file open read-only? It provides information on how to check the document to see if Read-only is enabled in this document properties.

If you have further questions, we recommend contacting Microsoft Support. The is because the document is related to their software.

Best Wishes.
