apple tv ethernet connection

Want to play video files on an iMac on to a large screen TV using a 3rd generation Apple TV box.

Trying to find out if I can use an ethernet connection between an iMac and an Apple TV box.

There is no wi-fi available.

I can play movies purchased using the Apple TV box which is played on to the TV from the Apple TV box.

Thanks

Thanks again

So if I connect the Apple TV box to a router using ethernet cable which has an internet connection, can I open and show files on the large screen TV using the Apple TV box? Say files created in Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Quicktime, these will have been created by me with no rights management involved.

You mention HDMI, that's what we are doing now, but the cable run from the Mac to the TV is so long the signal does not reach the TV. We can't connect the iMac with a short HDMI cable as the iMac is at the back of the room, the large TV is at the front.

DRM protected files (like from the iTunes Store or other commercial content providers) may still need an internet connection for authentication, for streaming via a device that is not the device on which it was downloaded.

Apple TV expects a network connection based on TCP/IP, with local IP addresses and NTP and DNS for all connected devices. Things that are typically managed by a router. That is different from file sharing between two Macs through a direct ethernet connection. There are no instructions for what you want without router. I haven’t read about any instance of someone succeeding in what you want without router.

You can of course make a direct connection from the Mac to the TV (skipping the Apple TV), using HDMI. Some Macs may need an adapter (e.g. Thunderbolt-to-HDMI) for that. You can then mirror the screen, or use as a second screen.
