Since upgrading to 16.1, can’t select text in books app. Double tapping just creates bookmark, holding finger on word does not select. I’ve rebooted both iphone 13 pro max and iPad Air 10.9” 5th gen. still can’t select text. Any suggestions, please?

Turns out the “trick” is to double tap and hold on the second tap, then while holding, drag to the end of where you want the selection to end. A bit cumbersome, so I’ll try your suggestion to see if selecting text works the way it should, thanks :-)

Thanks for the "trick". The double tap (hold on the second one) works for me as well, but is very cumbersome if you do a lot of highlighting like I do. Not sure why Apple changed the old method which worked well. Sigh.
It works fine for me. I suggest you offload the app and download it again (offloading retains all documents and data).
Just one long press on the word should bring up the dialogue box, then drag to select multiple words.
I haven't changed anything since updating. It works well on both iPad and iPhone. You can leave feedback with Apple to make them aware of the problem: Product Feedback - Apple
Picas, the double tap with hold (see Sanlee's post) works but is a lot more effort. Unfortunately the long press doesn't work (for me) since upgrading to iPadOS 16.1. If it's working for you in 16.1, have you changed any settings, by chance?
