Notification Sound Glitch on Apple Silicon Macs running macOS Monterey or newer
Hi.
Identical to the fellow who started this thread: Notification Sound Glitch - Apple Community
Every time I get a new notification or phone call on an Apple Silicon Mac tied to my Apple ID, I get what would sound to the untrained ear like a speaker problem. It's not a speaker problem though. Just like the person who started that thread would suggest, it's definitely a repeated tone that will play almost nonstop until the Apple Silicon Mac is woken from sleep and the sound effect is able to be played.
This doesn't happen on any of my Apple Silicon Macs when they are linked with that same Apple ID and are running macOS Big Sur (all of the ones I have are original M1 models that could still run Big Sur). Nor does it happen on any of my Intel Macs running any compatible macOS release.
This is clearly a software bug introduced macOS Monterey and it still persists in macOS Ventura 13.0 as well. I have taken in many M1 Macs into the Genius Bar for inspection and they all pass hardware tests. I've even had logic board repairs and speaker replacements done on some of them JUST IN CASE, but that did nothing. Incidentally, Genius Bar staff have acknowledged this problem also occurring on Apple Silicon versions of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros as well, so this is clearly not limited to the non-Pro/non-Max/non-Ultra M1 Macs.
The person in the thread I was linked to was told to check in their Mac for service. We are clearly well beyond that (as this is very clearly a problem with macOS and not hardware). Again, this has happened on MULTIPLE M1 Macs of mine (and clearly others' as well). I have done DFU restores using Apple Configurator 2; this doesn't do anything. Using a different Apple ID makes the issue go away. But, then again, I never had this problem on any M1 Mac in macOS Big Sur.
A fellow Apple IT professional suggested that it might be related to my Focus settings (as that's a feature new to Monterey and iOS/iPadOS 15.x. However, I don't have anything set on my Focus. I do not have Do Not Disturb up at all and I have made zero customizations to my Focus settings on the devices linked to my Apple ID. This also wouldn't explain not having the problem at all on any Intel Macs running either Monterey or Ventura (or anything else for that matter) whether or not they're signed into my Apple ID.
So, at this point, I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do. I'm pretty sure this is a support ticket that gets escalated to Apple's engineering teams. But they're so well insulated from us users that it becomes kind of impossible to resolve such issues that are clearly software related.
If anyone, working for Apple or otherwise has any productive suggestions or avenues to go down that I have not already done, I would love to hear them! Thanks!
