Siri can hear me but I cannot dictate in messages, Notes or otherwise

When I press the microphone in Messages, Notes or to dictate period, a mic shows up with an x next to it.

I can say "hey Siri, and be heard but dictation does not work. I've tried everything that has been suggested and nothing works.

Hello McGJK,

Let's use the steps below to make sure that your iPhone is all up to date:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.

5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

You can also find those steps in this resource: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support Updating can help to further isolate a potential software conflict.

Also, does that persist if you temporarily change Siri to another language, and then change back to your preferred language? Change Siri voice or language - Apple Support

Go to Settings > Siri & Search.
Tap Language to change the language that Siri uses for requests and responses.

Should that behavior still continue, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support: Contact - Official Apple Support They'll be in the best position to look into this further.

Take care.
