Trying to use MacBook Air M1 chip internal Mac on Zoom calls or MS-Teams with the Lid Close Clam shell mode

  1. While on an MS-Teams call or Zoom Call and my MacBook is closed or in Clam Shell mode I am not able to use the. internal MIC for people to hear me speak. I can hear the audio output.

2. Also,

When connecting my MacBook Air to my HomePod Mini I am not able to use the speaker mic when I close my Macbook lid. I get audio output, BUT people on a Zoom or FaceTime call cannot hear me or echo feedback. I work from home with two monitors connected to my MacBook Air M1. Also, there is no option to use the HomePod Mini MIC it just says MacBook as an option.

Hey Mr-Andersonn,

We'd be happy to help out. While we understand that you'd like to use your internal microphone of your MacBook Air while the lid is closed, this wouldn't be possible and is outlined in more detail below:

"All Apple silicon-based Mac notebooks and Intel-based Mac notebooks with the Apple T2 Security Chip feature a hardware disconnect that disables the microphone whenever the lid is closed. On all 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air notebooks with the T2 chip, all MacBook notebooks with a T2 chip from 2019 or later, and Mac notebooks with Apple silicon, this disconnect is implemented in hardware alone. The disconnect is designed to prevent any software—even with root or kernel privileges in macOS, and even the software on the T2 chip or other firmware—from engaging the microphone when the lid is closed."

All this information and more is outlined in more detail here: Hardware microphone disconnect - Apple Support

We hope this helps out.

Take care!
