The adapter in the 1st gen Apple Pencil box is a Lightning to Ligjtning adapter.

NOT a USB-C to Lightning adapter.

You work for Apple. You are a Apple Community Specialist. You should know this fact.

All of the Apple Specialists here should know about amything Apple, as far as I am concerned.

I know lots of stuff about old/er and brand new Apple gear and I don't even work or represent Apple.

All of you Communiity Specialists should know more than us mere Apple product users!

The adapter that comes in the box is a Lightning to Lightning adapter that is still needed for older iPad models that still use an Apple Lightning port.

You NEED to separately purchase the Apple USB-C to Lightning Adapter found here below.

Tap the link below.

USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter - Apple

Without this adapter, you will never be able to pair/connect and charge your Apple Pencil.

The sooner you order this adapter, the sooner you can start charging, pairing/connecting and usng your 1st gen Apple Pencil.

Good Luck to You!

Hi shandy33,

The 10th gen iPad would come with a USB-C port and a gen 1 Apple Pencil. In order to charge, yes, there should be an included dongle. There is no way to charge the Pencil without a female Lightning port to plug the Apple Pencil into, which the dongle provides.

If it is missing, contact either the seller of the iPad, or Apple Support directly for assistance.

Take care.

To all experiencing the problem of not being able to pair ipad 10th gen to 1st gen apple pencil (2nd gen pencil WILL NOT work with with 10th gen ipads.)

PLEASE READ MichelPM's posts. This fix is 100% accurate and confirmed. Apple stores know this is a problem but Apple phone support is giving the runaround of update and charge both devices to fix which WILL NOT work. Further talking to apple support, they finally admitted that the engineers know about the problem.

Contact apple support and tell them you need the USB-C to lighting adapter (part number MQLU3AM/A) and that it did not come with the pencil you bought. Insist that they send you one no charge - it worked for me. (link below - also in MichelPM's post) .

USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter - Apple You can pay the $9 + shipping if you want or insist they send it to you free. Either way - you NEED it to make the pairing work.

As MichelPM said: "Without this adapter, you will never be able to pair/connect and charge your Apple Pencil.

The sooner you order this adapter, the sooner you can start charging, pairing/connecting and using your 1st gen Apple Pencil."

Thank you for your help MichelPM !!!!!

As you are evidently now aware, the first generation Pencil is charged and paired from iPad10 using the iPad charging cable - and an Apple USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter:

New first generation Pencils now ship with this special adapter in the box along with the Pencil. However, some older stock purchased from retailers may lack the USB-C to Lightning adapter - and may instead have an older Lightning to Lightning Adapter.

For owners of older first generation Pencils, or for “old stock” new Pencils, the new special adapter can be purchased directly from Apple as an accessory.

As such, if purchasing a new first generation Apple Pencil to accompany an iPad10, you might be best advised to visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Retailer that has a high-turnover of stock - and ensure that the Pencil box indicates that the correct adapter is included.

If necessary, open the box in the Store and check that the USB-C/Lightning adapter is present - noting that the older Lightning/Lightning adapter looks very similar to the USB-C/Lightning adapter.
