iOS 16.0 and 16.1 Calendar

I've noticed since the iOS update to 16.0 and 16.1 that when adding calendar events, even though the default and event will show "alerts-none," an alert will be created at the time of the event when viewing the event in Microsoft Outlook 365.

I have the same issue and I've confirmed that I still have it after upgrading to iOS 16.2. I am using iOS's built-in calendar and have confirmed this issue with Microsoft 365 (commercial/paid) accounts and Outlook/Hotmail (free) accounts.

Couple other observations: after creating the event on my iPhone, the event shows with an alert of "None" on the iPhone, but has a reminder of "0 minutes" showing in Outlook. If I edit the event on the iPhone and set the reminder to 5 minutes and sync the calendar, Outlook shows a reminder of "5 minutes". If I then edit the event on the iPhone and set the reminder to "None" and sync the calendar, the Outlook gets updated to show a reminder time of "None".

It's likely a problem with the code that syncs calendar events to Exchange. It's not creating the calendar items with "no reminder" properly, but updates to the calendar item's reminder field seem to be doing the right thing.

I’ve confirmed that it isn’t an issue with Microsoft Outlook. I’ve created a calendar event using the latest iOS 16.1.1 without an alert, and then when I view the event on a different Apple device running a different/older version of iOS, the event shows with an alert. So it’s definitely an issue with the latest iOS - it’s creating alerts, though the default and event is set to none.

No, I followed the process to report it as an issue, but haven't heard anything back, and I don't know that I will. I confirmed that it isn't a Microsoft Outlook issue since I was experiencing the same thing when viewing the events in a previous version of iOS. I recommend that you follow the process to report it to Apple too. The more of us that report it, the more likely they probably are to take us seriously!

Are you 100% sure about the editing observation? Asking because I have a slightly different experience:

Exactly the same core issue, ie I create an event on the iPhone, alert "none". It arrives in Outlook with a "0 minutes" reminder.

If I then change the alert on the phone, Outlook does not change. Other edits (to text) sync up fine.

If I edit in Outlook, that sometimes seems to clear the problem and then changes work in both directions, but it's not consistent.

It's a weird one for sure.

I don’t understand how my mail applications are relevant, especially since I’ve recreated this issue several times without doing anything with email. For a calendar, I use the Apple Calendar on my iPhone and Microsoft Outlook 365 on a computer. For email I use Apple Mail on my iPhone and Microsoft Outlook 365 on a computer. The calendar/email account I’m using that has always synced everything correctly before the iOS update, is a Microsoft 365 account.
