FaceID requires specific hardware not found on iPad models that feature TouchID. Similarly, the TouchID sensor is not fitted to iPad models that have FaceID.


FaceID uses a camera and sensor array consisting of three Infrared modules - these being a IR Flood Illuminator, IR Dot Projector and and IR Camera - these being independent of the front visible-light camera.


Being hardware dependent, FaceID cannot be simply added with a software update.
