Certified USB-C to USB-C cables have male-plug at each end - as do USB-C to Lightning cables. The first generation Apple Pencil also has a male-plug - and therefore cannot mate with the connector of the cable without use of the special USB-C to Lightning adapter.

Testing demonstrates that it appears to be possible to charge a first generation Pencil (albeit slowly) using a USB-C to Lightning cable when used with the original Lightning to Lightning Adapter - this adapter being originally supplied with the first general Pencil. However, until such time as somebody in possession of a new iPad10 tests the capability, it unknown whether or not this arrangement will permit initial pairing of the Pencil with the iPad. This arrangement has not been documented by Apple.
