I want names, not icons, in Messages

On my iPhone and in macOS, the Messages sidebar is top-loaded with monograms and/or icons instead of the sender's name as found in my contacts. This effectively blocks my ability to see SMS messages in the order in which they were received. How can I get back to just names?

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. In my Messages app, I see names of those messaging me. Unless you are referring to something different than iMessage. Can you provide a screenshot of what you are referring to, but remember to block out any personal identifying information?
