Orange sim locked?

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I have just bought a new iphone 4. I had a iphone 3g and was using a orange pay monthly sim in it. So today my iphone 4 came and the only way i could use it was to cut my orange sim so it would fit in the new iphone.
I cut the sim very well and it fit perfect, but it said something like put a sim in thats not locked/no sim card installed?

Anyway, i had a spare pay as you go orange sim i ordered so i could practice cutting. I put that in and it works fine, full signal. So i tried my pay monthly sim again and nothing, just says no sim.

The sim is just over a year old, maybe thats the problem? i havent cut it wrong, the chip has not been damaged.
Is there anything i can do?
I was thinking of contacting orange and asking for a new sim, but if i do that do i need a reason for a new sim? i did ask them before if i could keep my contract with them but move my contract on to a micro sim, they said no, they said the only way i could have a iphone 4 from them is if i paid of my contract i have now and take out a new one, i said no because i have over a year left and im only paying £25 per month now.

If anyone can help i'll be very happy.

Ok, so i called orange. I said iv just bought a unlocked iphone 4 from apple. I asked could i transfer my account from my big sim on to a micro sim? They said yes not a problem. He said your paying £25 per month now, £5 of that is for your 500mb data allowance. He said you will need more data for the iphone 4, he said he will take away the £5 data cost and replace it with 750mb per month for £10. So my monthly bill has only gone up by £5. New sim card will be with me in 3-4 days and will cost £30 per month from then on.

Hi Hairy

Oh gosh - wish I'd seen this before! My advice to you would have been: ask Orange for your PAC (to keep your old number) and go with 3. You can get a SIM-only deal for £15, plus an Add-on of £5 for "unlimited" data. I've just done so myself and I am very happy. The problem with most of the carriers in the UK is they have spotty 3G coverage. O2 (during my contract) were absolute rubbish, though I understand they have put investment in since. Hmm ... I could get 3G at home with Orange, but not at my mum's - even though their coverage map said I could get excellent coverage. No doubt Vodafone and the others are the same.

Do the smart thing - and get the best 3G carrier in the UK. Before you think I have an ulterior motive - I don't work for 3 or have any affiliation with them. I just want value for money, and although I think the whole mobile industry are one of humankind's biggest scams, we have to work with what we've got.
