Left SHIFT key does not work after connecting USB keyboard

Hi there,

I have a MacBook Pro early 2011. My left SHIFT key stopped working after connecting an external USB keyboard. When I restart the computer, it restarts in safe boot as if the shift key was pressed. If I press option key when starting, it goes normal but the left shift key doesn't work. It works fine but suddenly it acts as if the shift key was pressed. I already tried:

restarting SMC and NVRAM

delete com.apple.keyboardtype.plist from /Library/Preferences

I'm sure the problem started due to connecting the USB keyboard. Something similar happened a few years ago but can't remember how I finally solved the issue, I tried so many things... but I do remember it had something to do with the USB keyboard.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

Hello GloriaHache,

Just to confirm, it seems like the left shift key isn't working on the built-in keyboard after disconnecting the external keyboard, is that correct? We'd like to provide some information that may help with that issue.

Please check out the details in this link, which has information and suggestions that can help if keys aren't responding as expected: If your Mac doesn’t respond to key presses

"If other keys don’t work

You may have accidentally set an option that changes how your keyboard operates.

  • Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Accessibility  in the sidebar, then click Keyboard on the right. (You may need to scroll down.) Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must press and hold a key longer than usual before it’s recognized.
  • Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, then click Pointer Control on the right. (You may need to scroll down.) Make sure Mouse Keys is off.
  • Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Keyboard  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Click Edit next to Input Sources on the right, then turn on “Show Input menu in menu bar.” Open the Input menu, then make sure the correct keyboard layout is selected."

Thanks!
