Fitness+ wont connect watch with iPad

Both have the latest software updates yet I get a message on my iPad saying Fitness+ is not available with your current version of watchOS. Watch series 8 running OS9.1 and it works with no issues with my phone. Any ideas? WiFi, Bluetooth is on and I have restarted both devices.
