An album is where you can place photos that you want to be together for some reason; e.g. "1998 Vacation photos" might be an example.

A folder is where you might want to place albums that you wan to be together for some reason; e.g., "All years vacation photos"

A Smart Album is an album that automatically groups photos based on a rule such as Date captured is after 11/15/2020

You may want to also click on Photos User Guide for Mac - Apple Support and go to the Table of Contents there for more information on Albums
