Poor Sound Quality Over HDMI

I purchased a new MacMini with HDMI to use as an audio and video server. This way I do not need an external DAC and have capability for hi-res video and multi-channel audio up to 192KHz. Sounds good?

However, after days of experimentation I have come to the conclusion that the HDMI audio is simply terrible. Lacking high frequency precision, boomy bass and a totally smeared sound field. I have changed connectors/inputs and every configuration of Audio Midi Setup without making any difference.

Connecting the optical out from the Mini to my receiver gives a very acceptable sound, however then I cannot get video output at the same time!

Anybody else tried this and any suggestions?

Technically, the HDMI bitstream should be the same fidelity as the toslink bistream.

When I first installed my 2010 Mini, the audio was via HDMI. I found the audio quality to be the equal of my previous Mini connected to my Denon receiver via toslink. In the last week, I have switched my 2010 Mini's audio connection to my receiver to toslink and experienced no change in audio quality.

So I would say that one possible cause is that something in your receiver is set differently in HDMI audio mode than optical digital audio mode. Some surround mode, EQ setting, MP3 restoration filter, or something is possibly engaging in HDMI mode and affecting the sound.
