i don't think I set up a passcode but did the face recognition. Now it asks for my passcode to access face recogntion???

I set up a new iphone yesterday and did face recognition security. Now, 24 hours later, it says I need a passcode to open the face recognition. I don't think I set up a passcode and if I did I don't know what it is!! Now I cannot access my phone for use.

Before you create a Face ID you needed to enter a passcode. That is the passcode you need, and you will need it in the future. The passcode is the primary way you access your phone; Face ID is just a shortcut to entering the passcode.

You will need the passcode in many situations:

  • When the phone restarts
  • When you have not unlocked the phone with Face ID for more than 12 hours
  • When you want to change any settings in Settings/Face ID & Passcode
  • Whenever you update iOS
  • When you put the phone into emergency mode by holding VOLUME UP and the SIDE button
  • When you intentionally disable Face ID by pressing the SIDE button 5 times quickly

If you can’t remember the passcode you will have to reset the phone and start over (and this time write down the passcode).

If your device has iOS 15.2 or later installed, you can reset it without a computer; check out this link→How to reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when you forgot your passcode - Apple Support. Otherwise you will need a computer:

See this Apple support link→If you forgot the passcode on your iPhone, or your iPhone is disabled - Apple Support

After restoring the phone using one of the methods above you can restore your most recent backup.

You cannot use Face ID without setting up a passcode. So yes, you have setup a passcode otherwise you cannot use Face ID

When you was setting up Face ID, the iPhone asked you to create a passcode to be the second step of verification.

See this link for further reference about setting up Face ID and the process that you’ve encountered

If you cannot access your iPhone because you have forgotten the passcode, you should erase the iPhone via the steps in this link in order to remove the passcode and gain entry to your iPhone again
