Preserving MacBook Pro battery life

Can I leave my MacBook Pro plugged in or should I unplug it from the charger?

I currently use my laptop at my desk and have a docking station but I don't want to ruin the battery by leaving it plugged in all the time. I reviewed this article Batteries - Maximizing Performance - Apple but it I couldn't find any information on the effects of leaving the computer charging for long periods of time.

The rule of thumb —

if you are near the mains leave it plugged in, if you need the portability then run on battery only.

this is how you reduce the cycle count and prolong the working life of your battery.

The built in Battery Health Management optimizes for you. You do not have to micro-manage the battery charging.
