Hi,
You need to restore your classic using iTunes, or Finder in macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. See Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support.
You might also look at the user tip. Corrupt iPod Classic - Apple Community. The first section has some options for recovering any media that might be on the iPod and not in your library. Restoring the iPod will wipe any existing data. There is a section on diagnostics can be used to check the health of the hard drive. If you post your stats I can help interpret them.

It should be downloaded automatically by iTunes when you follow the steps in Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support.

Hi tt2, I followed instructions and got these stats:
retracts 889
reallocs 12
pending sector 0
power on hours 2202
start/stops 894.
After one reboot they became:
retracts 11
reallocs 0
pending sector 0
power on hours 1220
start/stops 33750.
What is going on here? If you can shed some light? great
Bart
Well that is most peculiar. The numbers should generally stay pretty similar from one reboot to the next. Pendings can be converted to reallocations, but the realloc count should never fall, the hours drop, nor the start/stops vary so wildly. 😲
Have you been able to restore the iPod and remove the firmware error message?
tt2
No unfortunately. Whenever I hit the ipod recovery button, I get a message: "firmwarefile cannot be found" and then the ipod is not connected to my itunes library. I guess my solution would be: how can I let my laptop/ipos find the firmware file. I downloaded it online, but can't find the right spot to copy it to
