IOS Updates by Wifi Only

Is there a way to set an iPhone to do iOS updates using only wifi (no cellular) and keep the Automated Updates enabled.

To ask another way. I want to keep Automated Updates "On" but I only want the downloads to happen when on wifi.

I'm not asking about app updates, the operating system updates.

Thanks

Thank you for the response. That does not appear to be how mine works. I say this as I manage my bill very carefully. With automatic updates enabled I regularly exceed my 1GB target by several Gigs on cellular service. With automated updates disabled I never exceed 1GB and I have at least eight months of bill history.

Unless you have an iPhone that supports 5G and your carrier approves, you can only update the iOS on your iPhone using wi-fi. That has been the way it has worked from the very beginning. When you put your iPhone on the charger when you go to bed at night, if an iOS update is available and you are connected to wi-fi, it will download during that time period, and it will install if you have it set to do that, otherwise all it will do is download and then prompt you to install later.

Thanks for the response.

I already have the App store disabled for cellular and most other apps. Again I have eight months of bills showing that my combined data usage is less than 1GB. Likely it goes back further.

Any iOS update issue, or just about any update issued would take me over the 1GB target. Since mid September there has been five updates to the base iOS 16.

As I said, iOS updates, even if you have that set for Automatic Updates, will only update when you are connected to wi-fi. I suggest you turn automatic updates off, then you can test your cellular data usage more closely by what it is that you are doing. Take the time to reset the data usage counter for cellular and test for 30 days and see where your highest data usage is coming from.

Well they maybe the case but when I shut off "Automatic Updates, last fall, by usage went from in excess of 5GB for September and October to less than 1GB. So November 2021 through October 2022 I've been less than 1GB, twelve months of usage below 1GB with it off.

I shut it off last year after the barrage of iOS 15 updates and receiving two consecutive bills over 5GB.

I just re-enable Automated updates and will monitor data usage.
