Twitch TV Crashing - Everything else stable.

G'day,

Recently I've been having issues watching Twitch.tv streams on my late 2014 iMac 5k.

I use Google Chrome and have also tried Firefox to watch streams but the web page will either close with an error 11, log out my current user (So I have to put in user name and password) or it will kernel panic and reboot the computer.

I've deleted files, re-installed Google Chrome and even used a different SSD (The built in 128gig PCIE) and I still get crashes.

I have 32 gig's of ram and have a 2tb Samsung SSD in place of the original 1tb HDD.

I can do anything else on the iMac without crashing, such as a 4k video in YouTube on a loop for hours. Logic pro is running fine. Playing video's in VLC without any issues.

It doesn't seem to be hardware related because everything aside from Twitch is stable.

I'm not sure how to approach this issue?

If it was the 32gig ram modules then anything else similar to Twitch would cause a crash. If it was the SSD's other things would be acting unusual also.

The frequency of the crashes can be a few minutes to hours.

Any advice?

Thanks.

Tony

Well what would help is if you can post a crash report so that we can get an idea of what app exactly is crashing and potentially why.

There are a few methods to access the app crash reports:

  1. Via the Finder. They would be located at: ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports, and would have the .panic extension.
  2. Via the Console app. User Reports

You can then add them to a reply to this post using the "Additional text" tool on the ASC Editor toolbar.

Macs are very sensitive to the RAM used. Only a few brands are known to work well. Sorry, I'm not familiar with TECHMIYO, so I can't comment there.

If you suspect the RAM, trying substituting the previous modules, would be a good first troubleshooting step. Another would be to run Apple Diagnostics. There are also third-party RAM-specific apps for this as well ... like, Memtest.

FWIW. When it comes to non-Apple replacement RAM, I have had the best results from either OWC or Crucial.

I was playing a YouTube 4k video on loop today while I posted the above message and that TAB crashed.

Perhaps it's the 32gig RAM modules I installed?

I've put in the original 4x4gig modules to see what happens.

Perhaps it would make some sense that if the 4x8gig TECHMIYO modules were faulty (Or one of them) it would cause a random crash.

Grasping at straws.

I'll be getting a Mac Studio when the M2 version comes out, but it would be nice to hold onto this iMac if only for the 5k screen resolution.
