There is no means to check remotely. And no “proof” that the seller can provide you (remotely).

Auction sites and marketplaces are routinely filled with scam sales, based on the numbers of Activation Lock pleas that get posted around here.

One of the other scams that can arise is a seller that sells their insured phone, and then reports it stolen. Which then gets the phone blacklisted. They get a replacement phone and your cash.

There are ways to fake online sales seller reputations, too.

Buying from auction sites and marketplaces and any as-is source generally is perilous. At best.

Buyer Beware.

Do not buy a used phone unless you know the seller very well and can return the phone for a full refund if the phone is locked or restricted in any way when you receive it.

Labels or "photos" mean nothing.
