"A software update is required to connect to [my] iPhone SE2"

Why do I get this message when connecting my iPhone with IOS 16.0.2 to my Mac with 11.7.1. What is the update being requested?

MacBook, macOS 10.13

at times it needs to download some driver to communicate with newer ios devices

it's not a full macOS update
